Defining & Comparing Transport Stages

When splitting the transport chain pays off, and how to set it up.

For sea, air, and rail freight you do not have to request the whole chain as one price. You can split the route and tender individual legs.

The three legs

  • Pre-carriage — from the shipper to the port or airport of departure.
  • Main carriage — the freight leg between ports or airports.
  • On-carriage — from the port of arrival to the consignee.

Road transports usually run door to door and are not split.

How to select the legs

  1. Create a request and choose the transport mode.
  2. Tick the checkboxes for the legs you want to request.
  3. In the next step, enter the matching ports or airports.

Your carriers then quote prices for exactly the legs you selected.

When splitting pays off

When you want to specify the port. Separate legs let you determine which port of departure or arrival the goods run through. This matters when you work with your own customs agents at certain ports.

When you want to see the cost structure. With separate legs, the comparison shows individual prices instead of one total. You can see how the sea freight portion relates to pre-carriage.

When you award only part of the chain. For example when pre-carriage and on-carriage run through your own partners and you tender only the main carriage.
